Testimonials

Brandon Bye began writing for Fiction Writers Review in the fall of 2012, inaugurating a series for our publication entitled "Thoughts from the Hopwood Room," which focused on highlighting author visits to the University of Michigan as part of the Zell Visiting Writers Series. In particular, his posts featured a reflective recounting of the roundtable conversations these authors participated in in the Hopwood Room, including Brandon's own insights on the craft of fiction and writing process. The editorial staff was so impressed by Brandon's initiative, his keen ear, and his writing talent that we soon asked him to join the staff. And under Brandon's guidance we launched a new section of the website entitled "Shop Talk," which features some of our most-read series: "Stories We Love," "Author Takes," and "Under the Influence." I can't speak highly enough about Brandon's work—during 2014, the top three reads of the year came from Brandon's careful curation of our Shop Talk category. His own writing is similarly lean, focused, and sharp. It's a pleasure to count him among our editors.

It's a pleasure to write when Brandon Bye is the editor. Whether delivering on one of his assignments or something I've pitched, I feel like I'm working on a team with a colleague, not following orders. Brandon has a well-trained eye for what will make a good story. He's also an excellent writer, so I trust any suggestions he makes implicitly. I consider him a true advocate. Writers and editors alike will find him collaborative, original, and just plain cool.

He is a palpably enthusiastic writer, an engaging collaborator, and an all around encouraging editor. His ear is always open, and he is always willing to work with you, meet you halfway, or let you know if and where you've strayed off a path on any project. Brandon always steers the ship straight.
